Custom Warrior Mascot for USS Paul Ignatius
How Sparty the Spartan Inspires Pride, Unity, and Naval Spirit
Case Study
College Mascots That Embody the Mission
When the crew of the USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) sought to strengthen morale and represent their ship’s identity, they envisioned more than just a warrior mascot. They wanted a symbol of resilience, heritage, and naval pride, someone who could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with sailors and bring the ship’s spirit to life.
That vision became Sparty, a fearless Spartan warrior mascot, reflecting the legacy of Secretary Paul Ignatius and his alma mater, the University of Southern California. Sparty was created not just to entertain, but to represent the fighting spirit and professionalism that define the ship and its crew. A great example of college mascots!

About The Warrior Mascot | The Design
Designing Sparty started with a clear goal: to embody strength, honor, and connection. The Spartan theme was chosen for its symbolism and Secretary Ignatius’ Trojan roots. With custom armor and a shield inspired by the ship’s crest, Sparty visually reflects the ship’s identity.
Working closely with leadership, we refined the design, balancing boldness and approachability. As a result, Sparty can perform at ceremonies, engage the public, and motivate sailors both at sea and ashore. The costume, built for durability and mobility, suits both formal events and energetic outreach.

Sparty the warrior mascot Serving Onboard and Ashore
Sparty the Spartan warrior mascot plays an active role aboard USS Paul Ignatius, boosting morale and connecting the crew with the community. During ship tours and outreach events, Sparty adds energy and spirit. For example, he welcomes teams like David Glasgow Farragut, joins Rota High School cheerleaders, and rallies sailors during fleet visits and Navy traditions like the Army-Navy game.
More than just a warrior mascot, Sparty helps make each moment count—showcasing the strength, pride, and teamwork that define the USS Paul Ignatius.

More Than a Mascot: Heraldry in Motion
Sparty’s armor and shield hold deep meaning, drawn directly from the ship’s official crest. The shield features a white chevron shaped like a destroyer’s bow and three silver estoiles, honoring Secretary Ignatius’ three years as Secretary of the Navy. Above that, a red chief with golden waves and a sunburst, inspired by USC’s seal, symbolizes strength, energy, and service in the Pacific.
Together, these elements echo the ship’s motto, “Always Ready, Fight On,” shown in gold on a red scroll. This phrase ties Secretary Ignatius’ WWII service on USS Manila Bay to his lifelong USC connection. Through every appearance, Sparty proudly reflects Navy tradition and the spirit of the crew.
At Promo Bears, we’re proud to help bring mascots like Sparty to life: mascots that go beyond entertainment to represent history, service, and those who wear the uniform.
