About The Project | The Design
Champ the Monkey was designed to reflect both the energetic spirit of athletics and the unique character of Apeldoorn. Inspired by the Apenheul nature park, where monkeys roam freely among visitors, Champ was created as a playful and approachable figure, symbolizing agility, strength, and community. Therefore, a quote was requested including a free design of what Champ could look like. After several feedback rounds our designers succeeded in creating the perfect design for Champ. Production started right away with this remarkable costume. The result came out perfectly, showcasing a powerful and sporty monkey ready to cheer on everyone competing in the championships as well as the crowd!

Champ’s Journey: Building Excitement Beyond the European Championships
Before the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Champ the Monkey played a central role in building excitement for the event through the Champ on Tour initiative. Champ brought a local flair to the championships and helped strengthen community involvement.
The Champ on Tour program, led by the Province of Gelderland with the GSF and Atletiekunie, encouraged people to get active before the event. Meanwhile, schools, sports clubs, and community groups joined activities like the EK Keuze Vijfkamp, featuring Ren.Spring.Gooi, The Daily Mile, and the EK Atletiek Challenge Box. Additionally, groups could request a visit from Champ, making their activities even more exciting. As a result, Champ’s visits to schools, clubs, and community centers boosted enthusiasm for athletics in a fun and interactive way.
