Case Study
A Police Mascot with Meaning

The Santa Clara Police Department reached out to Promo Bears with a special request: a custom mascot costume for their new BRAVE program. This educational initiative targets 4th-grade students and focuses on values like respect, responsibility, and integrity.

They envisioned a police dog named Walsh. He would be more than just a mascot, he would honor Sean Walsh, a former SCPD Police Explorer who tragically lost his life while serving in Afghanistan. Since then, a foundation in his name has continued to support law enforcement canines, making the tribute even more meaningful.

Our goal was clear: create a mascot that students could connect with, while respectfully honoring Sean’s legacy. After close collaboration and thoughtful design, we brought Walsh to life: a symbol of courage, learning, and community connection. We were proud to be part of such a purposeful project.

About The Project | The Design

Walsh the Police Dog was designed to represent the core values of the Santa Clara Police Department. He also became the friendly face of their new BRAVE program, an initiative focused on youth education. As a police mascot, Walsh needed the right balance. He had to be respectful and approachable. Someone children could relate to, while also honoring the legacy of Sean Walsh: a former Police Explorer and fallen hero. The concept centered on a loyal, trustworthy police dog in uniform. One that would symbolize service, protection, and strong community values.

First, a custom quote was requested. Then, we developed an initial design to match the department’s vision. After a few rounds of feedback and adjustments, the final design came together. It captured everything SCPD had hoped for. Production began soon after. Today, Walsh proudly helps educate and inspire young students across Santa Clara, bringing the BRAVE program to life in every classroom he visits.

How Can a Police Mascot Make a Difference?

The Santa Clara Police Department introduced Walsh, a custom police dog mascot, as the official face of their new BRAVE program—an educational initiative aimed at teaching core values to 4th-grade students. Named in memory of Sean Walsh, a former SCPD Police Explorer who lost his life while serving in Afghanistan, the mascot honors his legacy while supporting a cause dear to his family: police canines. Through the BRAVE program (Building Respect, Awareness, and Values through Education), officers lead weekly lessons on topics like communication, responsibility, bullying, online safety, and substance awareness, all grounded in the department’s core values of integrity, respect, and trust. Walsh plays a key role in making these lessons engaging and relatable for young students, helping build trust between youth and law enforcement.

At Promo Bears, we’re proud to be part of projects like this—where mascots not only educate and inspire but also carry deep meaning and community impact.
